(Bernama pic)PETALING JAYA: The Kelantan assembly's four-day sitting scheduled to begin tomorrow has been postponed to allow the state government to finalise proposed amendments to its shariah criminal enactment.State assembly speaker Amar Abdullah said the postponement was made at the state government's request and the sitting will now be held from Aug 11-13, Sinar Harian reported."The government requested the postponement to finalise (amendments) to the Kelantan Syariah Criminal Code (I) Enactment 2019,” he was quoted as saying.Earlier this month, Kelantan menteri besar Nassuruddin Daud said the government intended to table amendments involving 16 provisions in the enactment at the next assembly sitting.He said the proposed amendments had already been approved by the state executive council.In an 8-1 majority decision on Feb 9, 2024, the Federal Court struck down 16 provisions under the Kelantan enactment on grounds that they were unconstitutional.The court ruled that the Kelantan assembly had no power to enact the provisions as they dealt with offences that fell under Parliament’s authority to enact federal criminal laws.The challenge was brought by Kelantan-born lawyer Nik Elin Zurina Nik Abdul Rashid and her daughter, Tengku Yasmin Nastasha Tengku Abdul Rahman.
