The "Works for Taxes" scheme is emerging as a way to finance reconstruction after the earthquake in Colombia: this is how it would work

Six days after a 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck Colombia, the government is analyzing the expansion of the "Obras por Impuestos" (Works for Taxes) mechanism to finance the reconstruction of the hardest-hit regions. This alternative financing route would allow private companies to allocate a portion of their income taxes directly toward recovery and rebuilding efforts in the affected areas.

At the same time, the aftermath of the disaster has highlighted significant logistical challenges in reaching remote regions. In La Encharca, an isolated community located along the Suruco River in the municipality of Medio San Juan in the Chocó department, residents continue to await the arrival of state aid and emergency assistance six days following the seismic event.
