Libyan factions sign an agreement in Tripoli to hold elections within a maximum of 24 months

Representatives from the eastern and western factions of Libya signed an agreement in Tripoli on Sunday to hold presidential and legislative elections within a maximum timeframe of 24 months. The accord, which was brokered with the backing of the United Nations, aims to advance a roadmap toward long-awaited elections designed to open a new era for the country.

Libya has remained institutionally divided since 2014, suffering from decades of conflict. The newly ratified text represents a consensus among the warring factions to cooperate on moving past the political stalemate and establishing legitimate governance through the ballot box.
