Louisiana school board and federal government end 61 years of segregation monitoring

A Louisiana school board and the federal government have agreed to end more than 60 years of oversight originally implemented to monitor and eliminate segregation. The agreement was finalized and announced on Thursday, coinciding with the first day of classes for Bossier Parish Schools, located near Shreveport.

The termination marks the conclusion of 61 years of federal monitoring for the school district. The oversight had been in place since the era of legally mandated desegregation to ensure compliance with civil rights standards in the Louisiana public school system.
