NewzPublic transit commuters will be able to go between Montgomery County, Maryland, and Baltimore, Maryland, starting later this month. The Maryland Department of Transportation Maryland Transit Administration MARC Train is expanding its service and will begin providing a direct weekday connection between Montgomery County and Baltimore, starting Sept. “This expansion of our MARC train service will further the Moore-Miller Administration’s priority of connecting people to opportunity,” Maryland Transit Administration Administrator Tony Bridges said in a news release.
“Baltimore and Montgomery County are home to millions of residents as well as, major employers, educational institutions and medical centers. Providing a direct link between these communities will help build a stronger and more sustainable Maryland.” The Maryland Transit Administration said in a news release that it was able to provide this new service without additional annual operating costs by adjusting some of its existing services. It said it was also able to reduce commute times.
A MARC train ride from Silver Spring to Baltimore Camden Station would be cut in half from 118 minutes to 57 minutes. The Germantown to College Park ride, which currently takes about 90 minutes, would be reduced to 46 minutes and the ride from Gaithersburg to Baltimore Camden Station, currently around 137 minutes, would be reduced to 78 minutes. The Maryland Transit Administration said its new service will directly connect Brunswick, Point of Rocks, Barnesville, Germantown, Metropolitan Grove, Gaithersburg, Rockville, Kensington, Silver Spring, College Park, Laurel and Baltimore.
One train will leave to Baltimore in the morning and one will return in the evening. To accommodate the new service, the Maryland Transit Administration said changes will be made to some of the Brunswick and Camden Line trains.
