Portugal rules out suspending Schengen with Spain and announces measures to strengthen border controls

A migratory crisis in the Spanish autonomous city of Ceuta, triggered by the arrival of approximately 50,000 migrants from Morocco, has prompted a wave of criticism and calls for increased border controls across Europe. While nearly all of the individuals involved have since returned to Morocco, the event has generated immediate policy reactions from neighboring nations.

In response to the situation, the Italian Ministry of Interior announced the temporary suspension of the Schengen agreement with Spain, introducing mandatory border controls in Italian ports and airports.

Meanwhile, Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro has explicitly ruled out suspending the Schengen agreement with Spain. Instead, the Portuguese government will reinforce its own border controls, placing a particular focus on the country's southern maritime and land borders.
