More pets, new commitments: 6 out of 10 households in Peru live with animals and allocate 5.2% of their budget to caring for them

According to data from the Instituto Nacional de Estadística e Informática (INEI), 64 percent of households in Peru live with at least one pet. The presence of companion animals is particularly prominent in rural areas, where it reaches 72.7 percent of families.

In addition to widespread pet ownership, Peruvian households allocate an average of 5.2 percent of their total budget specifically toward the feeding and care of these animals. The findings highlight the significant integration of pets into households and the corresponding financial commitment assumed by families across the country.
