Alex Bello was recognized for his heroic actions, saving an elderly man who was choking while having lunch on Saturday in Hialeah. “I’m usually a very shy person, so all this attention is a little overwhelming, but I’m just glad that I was at the right place at the right time,” said Bello. “And a family is now still able to have their loved one here with them.”Video footage from the incident shows Bello leap into action as the 29-year MBPD veteran, who was off the clock at the time, performed the Heimlich maneuver on the choking victim.
“Well the restaurant, as soon as everybody could see that he was awake and conscious, started clapping,” said Bello. “The wife obviously was ecstatic and so thankful, restaurant staff were so helpful and thankful too, that we were there to help this gentleman out.”Bello was in Hialeah to work at MBPD’s evidence warehouse. Miami Beach Police Chief Wayne Jones presented Bello with the department’s Lifesaving Award during a ceremony on Thursday.

at around 4:15 p.m., grabbed several items without paying and left the store.When confronted by a store employee, police said Lucas “placed her hand inside the purse area of her clothing” and said, “I have a gun and will shoot.”Police said the employee backed off as Lucas got in her BMW with two of her children, aged 4 and 13, inside. Her 13-year-old daughter was the one behind the wheel and drove her off, police said.Authorities said the employee provided vehicle and license plate information and they they went to Lucas’ home on Northwest 142nd Lane, finding both Lucas and the BMW there.Police said she admitted to the robbery, having her children inside and having her 13-year-old be her getaway driver.Officers arrested Lucas on charges of armed robbery, child abuse and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.She was being held in the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center with a bond listed as “to be set” as of Thursday morning, records show.
