Generational change, the main problem for the coconut industry in the Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic's coconut industry faces a significant challenge regarding generational turnover, according to statements made by Minister of Agriculture Francisco Oliverio Espaillat Bencosme. Data presented indicates that 71 percent of coconut producers in the country are aged 50 or older, raising concerns about the long-term sustainability and workforce continuity of the sector.

In response to this demographic trend, the minister emphasized that the Dominican State requires the active participation of younger generations to sustain and advance the agricultural industry. The issue highlights broader concerns over aging rural workforces and the necessity of attracting youth to agricultural production to secure future industry growth.
