The Senate of Colombia has authorized former president Gustavo Petro (serving from 2022 to 2026) to leave the country for a period of one year. The decision followed a contentious debate between supporters and opponents regarding whether the departure permit should be granted.
The authorization was formally secured during a legislative session on Wednesday, passing with a decisive majority of 73 votes in favor and 11 votes against the measure.
