Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay, who retires as deputy IGP tomorrow, said the current structure makes it difficult to give orders and assign duties to officers who technically hold the same grade. (Bernama pic)PETALING JAYA: Outgoing deputy inspector-general of police Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay has called for a review of the civil service grade for top officers in the police force.Ayob Khan pointed out that the deputy IGP currently shares the same civil service grade as the directors of the Special Branch and internal security and public order department, even though both come under the command of the deputy IGP.He said this could make it difficult for the deputy IGP to give orders and assign duties to officers who technically hold the same grade, Berita Harian reported.“After the IGP was placed on the Turus II grade, the government should have placed the deputy IGP on Turus III and all Bukit Aman department directors on Jusa A,” he said.Ayob Khan also proposed that all state police chiefs be placed on the Jusa B grade in the civil service structure.Jusa and Turus are grades used for the most senior positions in the civil service. Turus is ranked above Jusa, with a higher grade generally reflecting greater responsibility, seniority and pay.Under the finance ministry’s 2026 salary table, the deputy IGP’s current Jusa A grade has a basic monthly salary of between RM9,400 and RM26,200.Ayob Khan’s proposed Turus III grade will have a salary of between RM10,350 and RM28,560.The IGP’s Turus II grade pays between RM11,380 and RM31,140 a month, while the proposed Jusa B grade for state police chiefs pays between RM8,650 and RM24,030.
The actual amount depends on where an officer is placed on the salary scale and excludes allowances.Ayob Khan said he was not raising the matter for his own benefit as he was leaving the force, but hoped the structure would be corrected for future officers. He said the growing population has increased the responsibilities and workload of the police force, making it necessary for the government to ensure that the grades of senior officers reflected their duties appropriately.Ayob Khan retires tomorrow after nearly 35 years in the force.
