Tanzania bolsters its clean cooking energy campaign at the national-level

SINGIDA: THE Tanzanian government has stepped up implementation of the National Clean Cooking Energy Strategy through various initiatives aimed at expanding access to clean cooking energy for households and institutions as part of efforts to improve public health, protect the environment and promote economic development. The Chief Geologist, Ngeleja Mgejwa, a specialist from the Clean Cooking Energy Unit in the Ministry of Energy, said this while providing training to councillors of the Singida Municipal Council. Mgejwa said the government was continuing with the distribution of 452,445 subsidised liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders, of which 359,887 had so far been distributed to households in various parts of the country to promote the use of clean cooking energy.

He said the government was also implementing a plan to connect 1,000 households to natural gas, including 470 households in Lindi Region and 530 in Pwani Region, as well as various institutions. The initiative, he said, was aimed at expanding access to clean cooking energy for household use and social services. ALSO READ: Rotary Club of Dar Sunset provides clean cooking energy for 3,000 pupils On public institutions, Mr Mgejwa said the government was continuing to encourage institutions to shift to clean cooking energy, noting that 1,472 institutions had so far adopted clean cooking solutions.

He said the initiative was part of the government’s broader target of ensuring that more than 30,000 institutions across the country shift to clean cooking energy. Concluding the training, Mr Mgejwa urged councillors to use their leadership positions to educate communities about the opportunities and benefits of clean cooking energy. He said greater public awareness and community participation were essential to supporting government efforts to ensure that more Tanzanians adopted clean, safe and productive cooking energy solutions.
