Tanzanian government moves to restore MV Butiama services in Ukerewe Island

NANSIO: MWANZA Regional Commissioner CP Salum Hamduni has assured residents of Ukerewe District that the government is taking steps to improve transport and water transportation services, including restoring the MV Butiama ship, which was temporarily suspended following damage. Hamduni made the commitment today in Ukerewe District while addressing government staff, local leaders and residents during his introductory visit following his appointment by President Samia Suluhu Hassan at the end of August 2026. CP Hamduni said repair equipment for MV Butiama is expected to arrive on September 23, 2026, after which the Tanzania Shipping Services Company (TASHICO) will begin installing the equipment to enable the vessel to resume operations as soon as possible.

He said restoring the ship is important because MV Butiama has been providing essential transportation services between Mwanza City and Ukerewe District, connecting residents and supporting the movement of people and goods to and from the island. CP Hamduni also highlighted progress toward improving road connectivity in the area. He said a detailed design for the construction of a 900-metre bridge connecting the communities of Kisorya and Rugezi was completed in 2022, and that construction is expected to begin soon.

According to CP Hamduni, the bridge project will be accompanied by the construction of a seven-kilometre road, which is expected to further improve transportation and connectivity for residents in the area. He noted that the council has issued loans totaling 1.8bn/- to women, youth and people with disabilities, enabling them to undertake various economic activities.

Meanwhile, Ukerewe District Commissioner Mr Christopher Ngubiagai used the occasion to appeal to the central government to address several challenges facing residents, particularly those in the fishing sector. He said Fishing remains one of the major economic activities and sources of livelihood for people in the district. Despite the challenges, Mr Ngubiagai thanked the government for continuing to support the people of Ukerewe, particularly through the decision to construct a referral hospital with regional status.
