The only problem — the horse who benefited most wasn’t his. In the day’s top-rated, $1.4-million Open Allowance for three-year-olds and upward over five furlongs (1,000m) on the round course Dane Dawkins, aboard Desert of Malibu, came over on California Crown (Foster) in deep stretch to win by a neck over Rainsville (Raddesh Roman). The winning time for the race was 1:00.1 (23.2 x 47.1).
Foster immediately fired in an objection. The Stewards’ Inquiry sign was already up. After a long look the stewards on duty ruled Dawkins had indeed caused interference, and Desert of Malibu’s colours were taken down and placed third.
But here is the championship kicker: The win didn’t go to Foster. Foster was promoted one spot — from third to second — but it was his arch-rival in the jockeys’ championship, Roman, who was awarded the win. In a title race where every win counts, Foster’s sharp eye for an infringement ended up putting a big ‘W’ on Roman’s card.
California Crown had to settle for second, Rainsville got the $1.4-million pot, and the championship battle got even tighter. On Saturday, Foster won the protest but Roman won the race.
