The fourth annual Screenwriters’ Workshop hosted by Strike Star Entertainment is set to take place over two days from September 15-16 at Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts. The workshop, which is designed to introduce young and aspiring professionals to the film industry, will feature a keynote address by respected American film director Benny Boom. Other presenters and panellists include Vanessa Ballesteros (television producer and showrunner); actor John Chambers; producer, writer and executive Marvin Peart; Soyini Chang, entrepreneur, strategist, and creative executive; Morris Sinclair, cultural entrepreneur and project strategist; screenwriter Tyrone Rashard; John Buffalo Mailer, producer, screenwriter, journalist and playwright; Bryce Wilson, formerly of the music duo Groove Theory and a creative director, actor and producer; actor Djimon Hounsou; editor Olivia Rutigliano; and Cess Silvera, director, producer and screenwriter.

In an interview with the Jamaica Observer, Ricky Lee, CEO and founder of Strike Star Entertainment, explained why he decided to host the screenwriter workshop in Jamaica. “I’ve always believed Jamaica has one of the richest storytelling cultures in the world. The creative energy here is raw, honest, and deeply rooted in lived experience.

When Paul Eckstein [American actor, television writer and producer] passed, I felt an even stronger pull to continue the work he inspired — creating spaces where emerging writers can grow, be seen, and be supported. Edna Manley College represents that same spirit of artistic discipline and cultural pride. Hosting the workshop here allows us to honour Paul’s legacy while investing directly in Jamaica’s next generation of storytellers,” said Lee.

The very first workshop was held at The Mico University College, which Lee shared was a deeply meaningful beginning. “Our partner Steven Golding teaches at Mico, and he helped connect us to the institution. Mico is one of Jamaica’s first teachers’ colleges, so starting there felt aligned with Paul’s belief in education, access, and community.

That foundation continues to guide everything we do,” explained Lee. He told the Observer that the objective behind the workshop is to expand creative minds and opportunities. “Over two days, participants learn the fundamentals of screenwriting, story structure, character deve…
