(Bernama pic)GLASGOW: National weightlifting ace Aniq Kasdan delivered Malaysia’s first gold medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games by winning the men’s 60kg event and setting new Games records today.Aniq secured the title with a total lift of 273kg, comprising 121kg in the snatch and 152kg in the clean and jerk, with both the clean and jerk and total lifts setting new records.He finished ahead of Rishikanta Singh Chanambam of India who recorded 264kg, while Joshua Amunga Mboya of Kenya took bronze with 260kg.The victory opened Malaysia’s gold-medal account in Glasgow and added to the bronze won earlier by para powerlifting ace Bonnie Bunyau Gustin.Aniq was the defending Commonwealth Games champion, having won the men’s 55kg category in 2022 with a total lift of 249kg. He lifted 107kg in the snatch and 142kg in the clean and jerk, which was also a Games record.After the event, Aniq said he endured a nerve-wracking moment when both his legs suffered muscle cramps during the warm-up session before the men's 60kg event."When there were only two lifts left, both my legs started cramping.
At that moment, I thought, 'Oh my, this is bad. I hope it doesn’t end my run,’ because my target was to win gold. Thank goodness, everything went smoothly," he said."It was a struggle earlier, and during my first attempt I was worried that the cramps would return, but when I did not feel them after the first lift, I immediately gained confidence that I could bring home the gold medal for Malaysia.""I am happy to have brought home the gold medal for Malaysia and defended the gold medal from the previous edition.
