West Virginia eighth-grader builds low-cost 3D-printed bionic hand

Kianoosh Nawai, an eighth-grade student at the West Virginia Virtual Academy, has developed a low-cost 3D-printed prosthetic hand. The device was engineered to test specific mechanical functions, including grip strength and finger movement capabilities.

As a result of this project, Nawai has been named the sole finalist representing West Virginia in the 2026 Thermo Fisher Scientific Junior Innovators Challenge. The recognition highlights his contribution to accessible assistive technology through cost-effective manufacturing methods.
