Thousands of migrants have streamed from Morocco into Ceuta, a tiny Spanish territory in North Africa, prompting Spain to deploy its military to the border to restore order. The sudden spike in migrant arrivals resulted in a deadly border rush, with Spanish authorities recovering 57 bodies on the Spanish side of the border. Officials warned that the death toll could be even higher, noting potential additional casualties on the Moroccan side.

According to government officials, the fatalities occurred as migrants attempted to cross into the territory, with some individuals drowning and others being crushed in the crowd. Following the border rush, Spanish authorities reported that most of the migrants have since returned to Morocco.
